MY VOTE IS MY VOICE
On July 22, 2020 the National Trans Visibility March in partnership with The Human Rights Campaign Foundation will launch the ‘My Vote is My Voice’ initiative to educate and mobilize our community and allies to vote this November.
The focus of the National Trans Visibility March 2020 is to draw attention to and find solutions for the issues that play a role in disenfranchisement and gatekeeping against the Trans, Gender Non-Conforming, and Non-Binary (TGNCNB) community. To this goal, we have identified that voter suppression is a tool used to systematically maintain power and access in the hands of those who continuously seek to harm us. The effects of a racist administration using voter suppression to ensure that TGNCNB individuals are not included in the voting process are too grave for us to ignore.
Join us Saturday, October 3, 2020 for the 2nd virtual event!
21% of LGBTQ+ people are not registered to vote ( Williams Institute). A notable barrier to the voting booth for many TGNCNB people is the lack of access to identification documents and the social obstacles of “Voting While Trans”. We are asking our community partners to leave no stone unturned and join us as we demolish these barriers.
To ensure that our TGNCNB community is welcome to participate in the voting process, various LGBTQ+ community centers across the country can become safe spaces where we can go and participate in democracy like all other citizens.
On June 12, 2020, the current administration successfully repealed the nondiscrimination protections laid out in Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act which states that it is illegal to discriminate based on “race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability in certain health programs and activities.” Once the passed bill becomes law in August, transgender people can be legally denied care based on the religious or moral beliefs of the service provider.
These laws are passed against our community unanticipated so we must direct all our efforts to ensure that voters are informed, empowered in self-advocacy, and aware of their voting rights.
On July 8, 2020, the Supreme Court in a 7-2 decision upheld the current administration rule that gives insurance providers the freedom to deny birth control based on religious and moral beliefs. This decision is set to become law when Congress resumes session in August 2020.
We need to begin seeing this fight as a collective one. When LGBTQ+ healthcare protections are attacked, our cisgender allies across intersections need to be on the front lines with us.
None of us is free until ALL of us are free! We must seek solutions from our community and use the platforms already available to us to create solutions for liberation, equity, and justice!
This is a call to our entire community and allies.
Join us Saturday, October 3, 2020 for another live conversation with Ashlee Marie Preston (Trans activist, Founder of YouAreEssential.org) and Alphonso David (President, HRC) to make sure you are heard in the conversation. Registration will begin in August!
